With its cobbled streets, intricately carved havelis, and rich cultural heritage, Pragpur is enchanting

Nestled amidst the lush greenery of Himachal Pradesh lies the quaint and picturesque Pragpur Heritage Village. Pragpur and its neighboring village Garli were officially India’s first heritage villages when they were founded in the late 16th century.

This hidden gem, frozen in time, beckons travellers to step into a world where the past seamlessly intertwines with the present. With its cobbled streets, intricately carved havelis (mansions), and rich cultural heritage, Pragpur is enchanting.  The Patials established Pragpur in the late 16th century to honour Princess Parag Dei of the Jaswan Royal Family. The village was founded with a rich royal heritage. However, its true architectural splendour emerged during the 19th century under the patronage of wealthy merchants.

Pragpur, designated as India’s first Heritage Village exudes an aura of nostalgia and authenticity. Located in the Kangra district, this village transports visitors to an era long gone by, offering a glimpse into the lifestyles and traditions of yesteryears. Wandering through the labyrinth of narrow streets lined with centuries-old structures, one can’t help but marvel at the architectural marvels.

The havelis are adorned with intricate wooden carvings and exquisite frescoes. Walking along the cobblestone streets, past the old stores, houses with slate roofs and mud-plastered walls, and several havelis, it is clear that time has stood still in this community. With a glance, they remind us of old European villages.

Among the notable havelis is the Judge’s Court, a palatial mansion converted into a heritage hotel. The place stands out for its colonial charm and architectural splendour. Take Chateau Garli in the neighbouring village of Garli. This rebuilt hotel was created with European chateaus in mind. The appearance and feel of this structure will transport you to historic towns in France or Switzerland.

Additionally, one must see the Lala Rerumal Haveli, Butail Mandir, Chaujjar Mansion, the Sood Clans’ courtyards, and the public platforms, or atiyalas, in Pragpur. Adding to its allure are the warm and hospitable locals who welcome visitors to share their stories and traditions. Moreover, beyond the confines of the village, Pragpur is surrounded by idyllic landscapes and verdant orchards.

Despite its growing popularity as a tourist destination, Pragpur has retained its old-world charm and pristine beauty. So, when are you heading here?
